Late ancient and medieval fortress near the village of Vishegrad
Location: Located on the right river bank of Arda at around 150 m from the village of Vishegrad.
Description: Medieval fortress with an area of 562 square meters It rises to the notable peak with vertically hanging rocks toward the dam Studen Kladenets. The fortified wall is encircling the summit from all directions. In some places the walls are preserved to a height of 7 meters and width of 2 m.
According to archaeological research it was built in XII - XIII century. Are preserved the traces of two rectangular two-storey towers. The entrance was from the southeast. The fortress was studied in the period 1971-74. Number of artifacts were found which give reason to believe that here was located the residence of the governor of the medieval province Ahridos.
The area between the villages of Visegrad and Ostrovitsa meet some of the most beautiful agates and jasper in the Eastern Rhodopes.
Access: on the main road Kardzhali - Momchilgrad turn left at the village Gluhar. Rural cart road leads to the fortres itself, 200 meters from main road.
