Earth Day in the Nature Center “Eastern Rhodopes”

Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB/Birdlife Bulgaria) and more than 40 students and teachers from the local secondary school “Dimitar Madzharov” celebrated the Earth Day (22.04) in Nature conservation and information center “Eastern Rhodopes” (NICCER) in Madzharovo.

The celebration began with a short movie about the vultures in Bulgaria and after that the students drew their favourite birds in the drawing contest “Flying symbols of Eastern Rhodopes”. During the quiz they demonstrated remarkable knowledge about the biodiversity in the region and took many prizes. The event continued with interactive educational games and students learned about the importance of the pastures and other habitats, the negative effect of poisons and how the food chains work in nature. At last with binoculars and telescopes everyone observed vultures and their small chicks and felt the power of these magnificent birds.

At the end of the day, the students left NICCER smiling and happy with many posters, stickers and leaflets and with even stronger love for nature.

This activity implemented under the project “Promoting the Nature Information and Conservation center in Madzharovo and increasing awareness of wildlife heritage in the Eastern Rhodopes” is supported by New Thracian Gold project.
