Griffon vultures’ census on the Balkan Peninsula
On 29 November 2014, the 10th consecutive census of griffon vultures in the Balkans will be carried out. The event is organized by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) in partnership with nature conservation organizations in Bulgaria and abroad. It will be implemented by over 20 teams from Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia. The purpose of the census is to determine the total population numbers of birds in the Balkans, and their age structure.
Experts and volunteers from BSPB and Rewilding Rhodopes will count the griffon vultures in the valley of Arda River in the Eastern Rhodopes where the biggest and the only one natural griffon vulture colony in Bulgaria lives.

Bread Festival
The reconstruction of an authentic einkorn harvest will be again the highlight of the Bread Festival in the Eastern Rhodopes that takes place the village of Rabovo, Stambolovo Municipality from 26 to 27 July. This is the sxth edition of the Festival. The einkorn is considered to be the oldest cereal in Bulgaria.
The farmer Petko Angelov, one of the most active members of NTG network is the initiator of the Bread Festival. The einkorn bread is one of the attractions that Petko Angelov and his wife Stefka offer to the tourists in their Tepavitza B&B house in the village of Rabovo.

Open doors weekend in the Eastern Rhodopes in April
The NTG network in the Eastern Rhodopes opens its B&B's, farms and attractions to guests, tourists, local people and friends on 26 and 27 April 2014.
We would like to present the achievements of the NTG five-year work in the region: not with talks, but with concrete results, activities, attractions, events and tours prepared by our network participants.
The doors are open for everyone and you are warmly welcomed at various locations, like “The Wild Farm” in the village of Gorno Pole and the model farm in the village of Topolovo, “The Tepavitsa” B&B in the village of Rabovo, the guest house and winery “Bakalnitsa Trakya” in the village of Popovets, the unique tahini factory in the village of Kondovo, the “ Road of the cheese” attraction in the village of Pelevun.
You can also visit the Vulture Centre in the town of Madzharovo, where NTG helped updating the nature expo recently.
Don't miss the opportunity to see the two nature icons which were successfully brought back to the Eastern Rhodopes: the tarpan wild horses in the village of Sbor (Krumovgrad Municipality) and the European bisons in the Studen Kladenets Reserve! The organic tahini factory in the village of Kondovo, Ivaylovgrad Municipality
The first ever in Bulgaria organic tahini factory will be open for visitors on 26 and 27 April from 10 to 16 hrs. The guests will have the opportunity to witness the process of the tahini production, to taste and buy tahini and sesame. A kilo of tahini costs 13 BGN and the visit to the factory is included in this prize. You can receive information about the production of organic rye and wheat, organic sesame and nuts, and also buy those products. Karakachan horses and The road of the cheese in Ivaylovgrad area
In both of the days of the NTG open doors weekend at 11 o'clock in the center of the village of Pelevun begins the horse watching tour. The farmer Todor will wait for you at the information panel in the central square of Pelevun. He will lead you to Kostilkovo and take you on a nice nature tour in the area where you will dive into the wild Karakachan horses territories, will watch them roaming freely, and will learn how they live and what is their role as natural grazers of the Eastern Rhodopes nature. The nature area features its rich biodiversity, os you will also enjoy the meeting with a lot of reptiles, turtles, insects, butterflies, orhcids, etc. After the tour, Todor brings you back to Pelevun, where another farmer Miro and his family would already prepare a table with homemade meals and milk products from their own sheep farm. Bison, deer and vultures in Studen Kladenets Reserve
During the NTG Weekend in Studen Kladenets Reserve, you can visit the first European bisons in Bulgaria. They were reintroduced to the Eastern Rhodopes in October 2013 within the NTG frameworkand financially supported by the America for Bulgaria Foundation. The bisons are temporarely in an acclimatization enclosure. We'll tell you about these unique animals, which are iconic for the comeback of wildlife in Europe. During the two days the Studen Kladenets team will additionnaly organize a safari to the red deer and fallow deer in the heart of the reserve. These safari groups will leave at 15.30 from the sheep barns in Studen Kladenets Reserve and they will have the unique opportunity to watch deer at their feeding grounds. NTG experts and team members will informyou about the unique biodiversity in Studen Kladenets and show you vultures and other rare bird around. You can watch vultures with telescopes and binoculars, visit the interactive exhibition, which was recently renewed with NTG support and attend film screenings and presentations. The NTG model organic farm in the village of Topolovo, Madzharovo Municipality
The demonstration organic farm in the village of Topolovo of Krassimir Arabadzhiev, a.k.a as Kasim, will be open for visitors on 26 and 27 April from 10.00 to 16.00 hrs. Guests and visitors will have the opportunity to see various activities: demonstration of the production of fertilizer from Californian worms (solid and liquid fertilizer is for sale), demonstration of spinning wool, milking sheep, etc. Visitors will have the possibility to buy wool, to taste tea from wild and cultivated organic herbs, organic honey and as well honey from the organic certified bee hives of Enver Hyussein from the neighboring village of Rumelia. Both, Enver and Kassim plan to demonstrate the attraction 'The way of the organic honey'. You can witness it and buy honey, as well. The guest house of Enver will be opened to tourists. The organic orchard in the village pf Zvinitsa, Municipality of Kardzhali
The organic orchard of Georgi Koychev will be open for visitors on both days of the Weekend from 10.00 to 16.00 hours. The guests will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the rich agrobiodiversity in the organic the production fields where apples, apricots and other fruits are grown. Tasting of organic fruits is planned, as well. You will have the opportunity to receive information about the organic farms in the area and their products. The fish farm in the village of Madrets
In the village of Madrets a local family breeds fish in the nearby small lake and offers a trout meal, prepared by a special recipe. This is the most delicious trout in the whole Rhodopes mountains. During the Oped doors weekend the family proposes to its guests:
Saturday: 11:00 - take part in the preparation of a turkish baklava as well as the baking of the trout fish in the special stone oven. If you ever wondered how this incredble taste of the baklava is made - this is your chance to get it. The culinary lesson end with a lunch and eating of the baklava and the trout which preparation you were involved in. The whole attraction and eating makes 15 leva per person.
13:00, Saturday again - demonstration of how the honey is extracted from the beehive. The bravest ones can wear the special suit and take the honey from the beehive of their own. Then you will be awarded with a small jar of honey. All this for 8 leva per person.
15:00 - One hour boating tour on the lake of Madrets plus carp fishing for 10 leva per person.
Sunday: The program is the same, just instead of baklava the host woman will show you how she makes special pancakes. At 12 o`clock on both days of the NTG Weekend you can witness bread making from spelt in a very old traditional way. Wild horses near the town of Krumovgrad
During the NTG Open Doors Weekend you will have the unique opportunity to experience the wild beauty of one of the most magnificent places in the Eastern Rhodopes: the area of the abandoned village Sbor. New Thracian Gold celebrates its 5th anniversary on 25 April 2014 (Friday) in Kardzhali with NTG Day. At an outdoor event in the City garden of the town the Dutch-Bulgarian project team will present the results of its five-year work in the Eastern Rhodopes and announce the details of the program of the Open Doors Weekend in the Eastern Rhodopes (26-27 April).
The event is organized by NTG with the support of the Regional Administration of Karzdhali.
From 14:00 pm to 18:00 pm everybody can taste and buy local products – wine, tahini, herbs, nuts, and banitsa at the stands of NTG and the Regional Administration. They also can see and buy guidebooks and tourist maps, receive brochures, leaflets and various information and promotional materials about the region, its tourist attractions, and cultural and wildlife highlights. The visitors can talk with the NTG team and network members.
20 photos of “The Wild World of the Eastern Rhodopes” Expo will be exhibited during the event. This acclaimed exhibition has already visited Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Sliven and several other places including Kardzhali in May last year.
Bike tours to the Arda river, bird watching at the Heron colony at the Arda bridge and adventures in the rope-garden are also in the Program of the Day organized jointly with the NTG partners “House for books and adventures”, BSPB and the Youth Eco-club.

On March 13th, a groups of tour operators, owners and managers of guest houses, tourism and other experts will visit three sites in the Eastern Rhodopes where New Thracian Gold works actively: “The Wild Farm” in the village of Gorno Pole, member of NTG network; the Vulture center in Madzharovo which exposition has been renovated recently renovated with NTG support and the Studen Kladenets Reserve where NTG resettled red deer and in 2013 brought back European bison.

From 22 January to 28 February 2014 the exhibition of NTG "The Wild World of the Eastern Rhodopes" will visit Plovdiv. Guests and inhabitants of the city can see it in the building of the Municipal Council of Plovdiv.
The exhibition presents 26 photos of breathtaking landscapes, magnificent mammals, rare birds and reptiles, flowers and mysterious insects from this beautiful and little known Bulgarian region. Biodiversity of Eastern Rhodopes is one of the richest and most preserved in Europe: includes 1962 plant and 4329 animal species.
"The Wild World of the Eastern Rhodopes" was presented with great success in Sofia, Burgas, Varna, Kardzhali, Blagoevgrad, Sliven, in the Visitor Information Center of the National Park Rila and in the Nature Park Belasitsa.

Midwinter Waterbird Count
For the fifth consecutive year New Thracian Gold will join the traditional Midwinter waterbird count which this year will took place on 18 and 19 January 2013.
The Midwinter waterbird count is an initiative of Wetlands International. This census is conducted since 1967 in almost all European countries. In Bulgaria, the coordinator of the waterbird census is the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB). The goal of the census is to determine the national and international population size of waterbird and to assess the status of wetlands where they hibernate.

Griffon vultures’ census on the Balkan Peninsula
On 23 November, the 9th consecutive census of birds in the Balkans will be carried out. This year, the event is organized by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) and Vulture conservation foundation (VCF) in partnership with other nature conservation organizations in Bulgaria and abroad. It will be implemented by over 20 teams from Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia. The purpose of the census is to determine the total population numbers of birds in the Balkans, and their age structure.
Monitoring data of Griffon Vulture in the Eastern Rhodopes, which BSPB held annually, show a gradual increase of the population in 2013 where 67 pairs were recorded.
The survey in the Eastern Rhodopes is kindly supported by New Thracian gold project and ARK Foundation.

The official opening in Varna is at 10:30, October 24, in the Day of the Netherlands in Bulgaria and in the presence of the Ambassador of the Netherlands Tom van Oorschot and Mayor Ivan Portnih . City residents and visitors can see an exhibition of 13 photographs from the NTG exhibition together iwht exhibition presenting modern Netherlands in the lobby of the municipality ( blv. "Osmi primorski polk" № 43).
13 other photos from "The Wild World of the Eastern Rhodopes" will be displayed in the House of Water (Municipal Environmental Center) in Sliven. The official opening is also on October 24.

International Vulture Awareness Day
This Saturday, the world is going to celebrate the International vulture awareness day. This year Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds/Birdlife Bulgaria will take part in the initiative giving opportunity for many people to get in touch with the exciting and fascinating world of vultures. On the 7th September at 10 o`clock Nature and Conservation center “Eastern Rhodopes” in Madzharovo will open its gates for all visitors. During the whole day breathtaking movies and interesting lectures about the life of vultures will be presented. With telescopes and binoculars everyone can observe these incredible creatures into the wild - flying over the spectacular cliffs in Arda valley. We have prepared surprises for the children – educational games, drawing contest and a lot of prizes.
The celebration is organised within the project “Promoting the Nature Information and Conservation Center in Madzharovo and increasing awareness of the wildlife heritage in the Eastern Rhodopes” with the support of “New Thracian Gold” project in collaboration with the project “The Return of the Neophron” (LIFE 10 NAT/BG/000152).

Bread Festival in the Eastern Rhodopes
The reconstruction of an authentic einkorn harvest will be again the highlight of the Bread Festival in the Eastern Rhodopes that takes place the village of Rabovo, Stambolovo Municipality from 26 to 28 July. This is the fifth edition of the Festival. The einkorn is considered to be the oldest cereal in Bulgaria.
The guests of the Festival can witness the bread way – from the harvesting to the baking and have the opportunity to taste a freshly baked einkorn bread. An international workshop on einkorn and and the biodynamic agriculture is planned in the program. On July 27, the winners in the Einkorn contest for the most quality product from einkorn will be announced.
The farmer Petko Angelov, one of the most active members of NTG network is the initiator of the Bread Festival. The einkorn bread is one of the attractions that Petko Angelov and his wife Stefka offer to the tourists in their Tepavitza B&B house in the village of Rabovo.

The organic farming component of the project "New Thracian Gold" organized for the period June 9 to 15 educational visit to Austria, Slovenia and Croatia for members of the network of NTG. The aim is to exchange experience between the Bulgarian and European organic farmers and organic processors.
The program includes visits to the crop (grapes, cereals, fruit, etc.) and livestock farms in three countries.
Several cooperatives, organic shops and places for direct sales of organic products and foods will be visited.
15 of the NTG organic products producers and processors in the group will be able to obtain information and knowledge which then they can apply in the Eastern Rhodopes.

See the Birds of the Eastern Rhodopes in the Documentary “They Fly Away”
The documentary "They fly away" made by Simeon Tsonchev which tells the story of the wild birds in the Bulgarian part of Europe will be shown several times at the Cinema House in Sofia from 7 June to 14 June.
The film was shot between November 2011 and August 2012 along the Black Sea coast, in northwestern Bulgaria, in the Eastern Rhodopes, in Sakar Mountain and near Burgas lakes.
After Sofia the documentary will be shown in other cities of Bulgaria.

Presenting ''Before the Oblivion'' of an awarded by NTG Author
On June 6th, the journalist from the Bulgarian National Radio Rumen Stoichkov will present his book with travel stories and reportages “Before the oblivion” in the Military Club in Kardzhali (6 pm).
There are ten stories about the Rhodopes in the book. The “gem” among the ten stories is “Madzharovo - legends from the volcano’s throat”published in Gulliver news magazine in 2005. "Madzharovo" is also the title of Rumen Stoichkov’s travel story awarded with the second prize in the second edition of the competition “Eastern Rhodopes – taste the wild nature” organized by New Thracian Gold in 2012.

The „Wild World of the Eastern Rhodopes“ Visits Blagoevgrad
“The Wild World of the Eastern Rhodopes" – the exposition that enjoyed a great interest in Sofia and in Kardzhali in April and May - is visiting now Blagoevgrad, Southwestern Bulgaria. The first day when the inhabitants and guests of the town can see it in front of the Regional Historical Museum is symbolic: June 5th is the World Environment Day. The exhibition will stay in Blagoevgrad two weeks - till June 20th.
“The Wild World of the Eastern Rhodopes" presents images of breathtaking landscapes, wonderful mammals, rare birds and reptiles, beautiful flowers and elusive insects. One of the highlights is the picture of wild horses Tarpans which were resettled again in the Eastern Rhodopes in 2011 by New Thracian Gold project.

Opening of Organic Tahini Factory BIOTERRA – IVAYLOVGRAD Ltd.
On May 23rd, the Organic Tahini Factory BIOTERRA – IVAYLOVGRAD Ltd. will be officially opened in the village of Kondovo, Municipality Ivaylovgrad.
Dr. Darko Znaor, New Thracian Gold Deputy team leader, Ms. Diana Ovcharova, Mayor of Ivaylovgrad, Dirk-Hein Montagne, an expert on quality and standards and two other foreign experts - Barbara Steurer from the Austrian Council for Agricultural Engineering and Rural Development, a leading Austrian organisation dealing with agri-environment and nature conservation and Sonja Karoglan from Ecologica, a Croatian organisation working at the cutting edge between agriculture and nature protection – are expected to be present at the official ceremony (11 am).
In 2010, a group of fellow agricultural producers from Ivaylovgrad region received knowledge and advice from the NTG project on organic growing of cereals and sesame. In 2012, NTG provided machines for improving yields, for weeding and a combiner for improving quality. As a result, the cooperators registered the ‘Bioterra-Ivaylovgrad’ Ltd. aimed at cooperation and adding value to primary produce – the NTG project helped them again by providing machines for processing of sesame to a tahini paste. The cooperative ‘Bioterra-Ivaylovgrad’ Ltd. is established to demonstrate a model for development of the organic farming and processing in a rural area of Bulgaria.

International Day for Biological Diversity
Traditionally, on the 22th of May the whole world celebrates the International day for biological diversity. The theme of the campaign this year is “Water and biodiversity”. It was chosen to coincide with the United Nations designation of 2013 as the International year of water Cooperation. Comparatively small in size but with a remarkable diversity of habitats Bulgaria holds the greatest biodiversity in whole Europe. This fact does not only make us proud, but also determine the responsibility that we have in protecting this national treasure.
Bulgarian society for the protection of birds invites you in Kardzhali town where with binoculars and telescopes you will have the chance to observe the emblematic for the town heron colony and learn more about the life and the threats that these mysterious birds face. The meeting point is at the beginning of the new bridge for Vazrojdenci. This event will start at 15:00 and continue till 18:30. All citizens and visitors of Kardzhali are welcomed! Come and learn more about the unbreakable bond between human and nature and the importance of biodiversity. We will organize quiz about biodiversity and a lot of prizes for the youngsters. Film on the Bulgarian Wild Horses Tarpans
n mid-May, international equine filmmakers Horsefly Films will be filming the Tarpan of the NTG project in the Eastern Rhodopes for the second documentary in their ongoing series on rare equine breeds around the world. Having created acclaimed equine documentary films, the team of Sophie Pegrum and Jen Miller have recently formed the Horsefly Films Rare Equine Trust which will oversee the creation of this library of films. The RARE series of films captures the beauty, history and the fragile position of rare breeds and the work of those trying to preserve them, establishing a necessary and compelling film folio for equine enthusiasts, social historians and general audiences while archiving these breeds and related cultures for posterity.

Lectures on the Biodiversity in the Eastern Rhodopes
In the period 8 - 12 April, a team of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB/Birdlife Bulgaria) visits schools in Kardzhali town and the region to give lectures on the unique nature and biodiversity in the Eastern Rhodopes.
The schedule of this week includes schools in Kardzhali, Krumovgrad, Potochnitsa, Madzharovo, Svesdel, Nanovitsa, Raven, Shiroko Pole, Tchiflik, Most. Later in the year those schools are invited to visit the vulture center for some interesting outdoor nature experience.

Kardzhali and Haskovo Join Earth Hour
Kardzhali and Haskovo, the centers of the two provinces of the Eastern Rhodopes, join Earth Hour 2013 which will be on March23, 2013 (Saturday) from 20:30 to 21:30. The initiative is organized by World Wildlife Fund (WWF). 98 Bulgarian cities have joined the initiative, so far. Zlatograd is among them.
NTG hopes that more cities in the Eastern Rhodopes will join the initiative.

Ivaylovgrad celebrates Kukeri Day, the traditional Bulgarian ritual to scare away evil spirits. It is organized every year end of the winter/begin of the spring in Ivaylovgrad. This ritual has ancient Thracian origins.
Costumed men perform a dance and walk through the village, to chase away the bad spirits and provide a good harvest, health and happiness for the inhabitants. After going around the village they gather at the square to dance wildly and amuse the people.

The biggest tourism forum and NTG
In March 2013, during ITB - Berlin, New Thracian Gold with ECEAT – The Netherlands will introduce Eastern Rhodopes as a destination for eco and adventure tourism. The team of tourism component - Michaela Kircheva and Johan Bekhuis planned hiring a booth, where, besides printed matter will be organized meetings with specialized tour operators. ITB is the world's leading Tourism Forum, open for business and general public, with representatives of tourism companies, resorts, associations, regions, associations, municipalities and media from around the world.
In 2012 Michaela Kircheva visited the exhibition as a guest of the stand of the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism when at the official presentation Bulgaria's Deputy Minister Ivo Marinov pointed New Thracian Gold as a good example of successful development of sustainable tourism products in the Eastern Rhodopes.

Organic producers and processors of New Thracian Gold network meet at a seminar in the village of Stambolovo on February 15th, 2013. World Wetlands Day in Kardzhali
If you would like to see and learn about the wintering waterfowl in Kardzhali come to the New bridge on Arda River on February 2nd 2013, at 12:00- 15:00 and celebrate with us the World Wetlands Day.
The initiative is organized by New Thracian Gold jointly with Community Center “Obedinenie 1913” and Bulgarian Society for the Protection of the Birds. With this initiative we hope to raise the public awareness for the conservation of wetlands and their wild inhabitants. On this World Wetland Day a birdwatching point and information desk will be organized on the bridge.
2 February is the international date for World Wetlands Day. It marks the declaration date of the Wetlands Convention on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Each year since 1997 governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and citizens at all levels of the community seized the opportunity to raise public awareness for wetland values and benefits in general, and the Ramsar Convention in particular.
The theme for this year’s World Wetlands Day on 2 February is “Wetlands and Water Management”.

Midwinter Waterbird Count
For the fourth consecutive year New Thracian Gold will join the traditional Midwinter waterbird count which this year will took place on 12 and 13 January 2013.
The Midwinter waterbird count is an initiative of Wetlands International. This census is conducted since 1967 in almost all European countries. In Bulgaria, the coordinator of the waterbird census is the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB). The goal of the census is to determine the national and international population size of waterbird and to assess the status of wetlands where they hibernate.

NTG at World Travel Market 2012
From 5 to 8 November 2012, the NTG tourism coordinator Mihaela Kircheva will present the project and promote the Eastern Rhodopes as a great ecotourism destination at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London. With the advisory of the ECEAT (European Centre for Eco Agro Tourism) Mihaela prepares a marketing campaign among UK tour operators. NTG materials will also be present at the Bulgarian national desk (EM700).
World Travel Market is the leading global event for the travel industry conducted early at the Excel exhibition and conference centre in London. It is a B2B event where companies from all over the world present a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to other travel professionals. It is a unique opportunity for the whole global travel trade to meet, network, negotiate and do business under one roof.
WTM in London is the third international fair abroad on which the NTG promotes the Eastern Rhodopes and their treasures. In March 2012, the Eastern Rhodopes were promoted at the ITB in Berlin and in April - at the Destinations Nature in Paris. The expected result is to attract international partners to start forwarding tourists to the Eastern Rhodopes.

Information Meeting on the Long distance hiking and biking route in the Rhodopes
On 26 October, partners of NTG network along the Long distance hiking and biking route in the Rhodopes meet at an information meeting in Kardzhali.
The route starts from Pamporovo, goes to the East passing the Western Rhodopes, Kardzhali dam lake, the area of the reserve Studen Kladenets, the towns of Ivaylovgrad and Madzharovo and ends in Kardzhali. The route is split into 40 small routes (days) and each of them starts and ends in an accommodation site – partner of NTG.
The development of the Long distance hiking and biking route in the Rhodopes started in October 2011. The idea is to connect all routes (marked and not marked) in one long route. New Thracian Gold works on the Long distance hiking and biking route in the Rhodopes in partnership with Association Bikearea and Foundation House for Books and Adventures.

Cooking Day – 2 in the Eastern Rhodopes
The New Thracian Gold project organises second series of organic culinary events 'Cooking Days – 2’’ with organic and local agricultural produce and food from the Eastern Rhodopes. The major demonstration event will occur on 5 October in the village of Gorno Pole, Madzharovo Municipality, at the ‘’Wild farm’’.
The Dutch culinary expert Carolina Verhoeven assisted by Betty Vassileva from the Wild farm will demonstrate preservation/conservation cooking with traditional local products, conservation of food, using culinary heritage, etc. Dirk-Hein Montagne, quality and standards expert will give recommendations on EU standards on local/home processing of agricultural produce and food.
The two Dutch culinary experts will be joined by Martien Lankester, the Executive director of the Dutch Avalon Foundation.
The second Culinary event offers an excellent opportunity for introducing the concept and practices of preservation in cooking with organic ingredients, good hygiene conditions/requirements and the EU standards in the region of the Eastern Rhodopes, where NTG project is actively working. The target groups of the event such as local organic producers, guest-house and restaurant owners/managers/chefs, small-size processors, local municipality members, media, etc. will learn about above-specified EU and BG standards during a seminar in Kardzhali on 6th of October.

On 18 September 2012, the tourist attraction “The Route of Cheese“ will be officially opened in the sheep farm of Huskov family in the village of Pelevun, Ivaylovgrad Municipality.

On 16 September, New Thracian Gold will have a desk at the opening of the European Mobility Week in the underoass of the Sofia University (11 am – 1.30 pm).
Dutch Princess Laurentien van Oranje will launch the Mobility Week initiatives together with Ambassador of the Netherlands Karel van Kesteren.
The official guest will learn about the rich biodiversity of the Eastern Rhodopes and the initiatives of NTG project in its three components: wildlife, organic farming, and ecotourism.
The participants in the event can find at the NTG desk the tourist map, guidebook and culinary guidebook to the Eastern Rhodopes, plenty of brochures and leaflets on the region, lots of local organic products: wine, honey, herbs, nuts, etc.
The visitors of the NTG desk will get information about the possibilities for biking tours in the Eastern Rhodopes and will have the opportunity to talk with project representatives and young volunteers from the Ecoclub – Kardzhali.

NTG Ecoclub presents the Eastern Rhodopes to Dutch Princess Laurentien
On 15 September, the Youth Ecoclub that New Thracian Gold (NTG) supports within its educational program will present the Eastern Rhodopes and its nature conservation activities to Dutch Princess Laurentien during a children's workshop in Sofia.
Princess Laurentien van Oranje visits Bulgaria for second time at the invitation of Credo Bonum Foundation (15-17 September 2012).
The young people of the Ecoclub will tell the Princess and the children at the workshop about the Eastern Rhodopes and their amazing biodiversity, about the endangered species and rare flowers in the region, about the Tarpans, wild horses reintroduced in Bulgaria by NTG project. Children will hear interesting stories about the Vulture, Shorthorn cattle, Karakachan horse and other animals in the Eastern Rhodopes and about the importance of the nature protection which is one of the pivotal tasks of NTG.

Bread Festival in the Eastern Rhodopes
The reconstruction of an authentic einkorn harvest is going to be one of the highlights of the Bread Festival in the village of Rabovo. The Вread Festival is a newborn tradition which took place for the first time in July 2010. The einkorn is considered to be the oldest cereal in Bulgaria.
The guests of the Festival can witness the track of the bread all the way, from start to finish – from harvesting to baking and tasting. The traditional processing of the einkorn grain and having the opportunity to taste a freshly baked einkorn bread in a wonderful experience. The farmer Petko Angelov is the initiator of the Bread festival. The einkorn bread is one of the attractions that Petko Angelov and his wife Stefka offer to the tourists in their Tepavitza B&B house in the village of Rabovo.

Photo Exhibition on Orchids at Mysteries of Huhla 2012
New Thracian Gold (NTG) will take part in this year's edition of the Festival "The Mysteries of Huhla" (July 14) with a photo exhibition on orchids. Hristo Hristov and Stefan Avramov, experts on wildlife and biodiversity in the project and Tsvyatko Apostolov are the photographs of the orchids.
The photos of The Mysterious Flowers of the Eastern Rhodopes will be exposed in the building of Library in the village of Huhla (Ivaylovgrad Municipality). The opneing is scheduled at 7 pm on 14 July, Saturday. The visitors can buy the giudebook and the tourist map made within the NTG project.
The initiative for the festival is the journalist Ivan Bunkov, who is born in this village.

On 4 July the Organic farming component of New Thracian Gold (NTG) project organizes training seminar for farmers, grain producers in the organic demo farm in the village of Topolovo, Madzharovo Municipality.
The seminar will be led by the coordinator of organic farming in NTG Assoc. Prof. Vladislav Popov with the assistance of lecturer-specialist of the Agricultural University Assoc. Prof. Tanko Kolev and representatives of the company for fertilizers and organic products.
Besides the theoretical basis of organic production mainly of wheat (hard and soft) and rye, to which there is a significant interest from retailers, at the seminar will be also discussed practical issues of fighting diseases and pests, breeding, mechanization, harvesting and others.

The new guest house of Vasilievi's family
On 26th of April Beti and Nikolay Vasilievy will officially open their new guest house, part of their "Wild Farm" in the village of Gorno pole. The expanstion of the guest house was financially supported by the "New Thracian Gold".
Vassilievi family is an example of the operation of the three NTG components – they have guest rooms, produce organic food and maintain a herd of Rhodope Shorthorn cattle. Betty and Nikolay live in the village of Gorno pole after they have graduated. They have four children. These people are the new gold of the Eastern Rhodopes, as BNR, Bulgarian National Radio journalist called them in the program on the region and NTG project.

"New Thracian Gold" (NTG) will be represented at the Ninth International Tourism Exhibition "Cultural Tourism", which will take place from 19 to 21 April in Veliko Tarnovo. This is the first participation of the project in the exhibition.
The exhibition is among the largest and most famous Bulgarian forums focusing on challenges and prospects in the development of cultural tourism. Municipalities, NGOs, cultural institutions and companies in the tourism and related sectors present their potential for tourism development in Bulgaria.
Over 30 Bulgarian municipalities will participate in the ninth edition of the international cultural tourism fair this year.

The Eastern Rhodopes Join Earth Hour
Kardzhali and Haskovo, centers of two provinces of the Eastern Rhodopes, join the fifth edition of Earth Hour which will be on March 31, 2012 (Saturday) from 20:30 to 21:30. Zlatograd also joins the initiative.
The initiative organized by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is held for the third year in our country. 70 Bulgarian cities have joined the initiative, so far.
The slogan of the fifth edition of Earth Hour is “You and I act together”, trying to show that each of us is able to change the world with small but consistent actions.
In 2011, 4000 cities from 125 countries took part in the initiative.

Seminar for certified and in transition organic producers – partners of NTG
On March 23 (Friday) the project New Thracian Gold (NTG) is organizing next training seminar certified or in transition organic producers - partners of NTG in Kardzhali (hotel "Ustra" at 10.00 o’clock).
The seminar aims to familiarize the producers with the properties for submission applications for support under Measure 214 and direct payments in 2012 – preparing and completing paperwork, and other requirements that are very important to obtain financial subsidies by the Rural Development Program (2007-2013) and on time and without penalties.

New Thracian Gold project will participate in 21st International Agricultural Exhibition AGRA which will be held from 6 to 10 March 2012 in Plovdiv.
The International Agricultural Exhibition AGRA focuses the attention on the Bulgarian and foreign agribusiness. The most successful agricultural forum in Southeast Europe is a showcase for the new achievements and a compass for the current trends in the sector. AGRA links science with production, the manufacturers with the consumers. AGRA has been a UFI-approved event since 1995.
BioAgra Trade Exhibition of Organic Farming will be held for the first time within the framework of the 21st International Agricultural Exhibition AGRA. The event is organized in partnership with the AVALON Foundation, the Netherlands and the Agroecological Centre at the Agricultural University, Plovdiv. The exhibition is aiming to highlight organic farming as a production system that respects the environment and animal welfare and to showcase organic products аs a healthier alternative.
BioAgra will be accompanied by a comprehensive business events programme including a conference on "Marketing of Organic Farming" and an "Evening of Organic Food" organized in cooperation with the Royal Netherlands Embassy and AVALON Foundation, the Netherlands.

Ivaylovgrad celebrates Kukeri day, the traditional Bulgarian ritual to scare away evil spirits. It is organized every year end of the winter/begin of the spring in Ivaylovgrad neighborhood Ladzha.
This ritual has ancient Thracian origins.
Costumed men perform a dance and walk through the village, to chase away the bad spirits and provide a good harvest, health and happiness for the inhabitants. The costumes cover most of the body and include decorated wooden masks of animals (sometimes double-faced) and large bells attached to the belt.
After going around the village they gather at the square to dance wildly and amuse the people. The ritual varies by region but its essence remains largely the same.

The touristic guidebook presents in a modern way known and unknown cultural, historical and natural sites of the Eastern Rhodopes. It also offers practical information on active recreation, selected hotels, B&Bs and restaurants, transport links and tourist information centers.
The guidebook is published in two separate versions: Bulgarian and English. Its author is Georgi Palahutev, a passionate traveler and photographer.

Round Table on the Tarpans with the Stakeholders in the Region of Krumovgrad
A round table meeting on the tarpans recently reintroduced in the area of village of Sbor is scheduled on November 28, Monday in Krumovgrad.
Purpose of the Tarpan Meeting:
- Informing the local stakeholders (authorities, farmers, hunters, business, NGO sector, etc.) on the Tarpans in the village of Sbor and on the Tarpan pilot current and future developments.
- Presenting the Dutch experience with the Tarpans and its importance for the biodiversity and tourism development in the region.
- Discussing the risks which the local stakeholders see in the future of the Tarpan pilot
- Discussing of joint (project and local people) ideas for the Tarpan pilot development; discussing the potential and the possibilities for tourism development in the region of Krumovgrad to which the tarpans could contribute
- Achieving on agreement for voluntary cooperation among the local stakeholders for the successful development of the Tarpan pilot. Establishing a working group

21 October is Day of Kardzhali. On October 21, 1912 the detachment of General Vasil Delov's frees Kardzhali and Eastern Rhodopes from Ottoman rule. This day was first declared holiday in 1937 and then again in 1998 as an official holiday of the town.

Organizers of "Biomania 2011" are the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and "Studio Golden Age" LTD. The initiative began on 8 October - Saturday and will include various events throughout the country.

Entrepreneurs from Strandzha in Eastern Rhodope
A group of about 35 entrepreneurs from Strandzha will visit Eastern Rhodopes for four days in the early October. The initiative is from Strandzha Natural Park. The goal is to get acquainted with local initiatives for tourism development , organic farming and nature conservation. The group will visit the "Wild Farm" of Bety and Nikolay in the village of Gorno pole, the complex "Tepavitsata" of Stefka and Petko in the village of Rabovo, they will meet the two young farmers in the village of Plevun, Todor and Miro, with the producers of grapes and wine Yonko and Dimo in Stambolovo, also will meet Sevda and Feti, who are rebuilding a guest house and own a small restaurant in the village Madrets.
Last year entrepreneurs from the Eastern Rhodopes in the field of rural tourism and agriculture visited Strandzha to learn from their experience.

Kardzhali Hosts International Environment Festival
From 16 to 18 September Kardzhali hosts the the International Environmental Festival "Green Wave - 21st Century" for films and TV programmes dedicated to ecology and environmental protection.
The event is organized for the fifth year by the European Environment Festival Foundation in partnership with Kardzhali Municipality. This year's edition of the festival includes 74 productions of leading world and European media, independent producers and environmental organizations from 22 countries.
An international jury will award the Stork Nest Grand Prix in several categories, including the Best Balkan Environmental Film.
A round table “Urbanization and Industry Pollution: Ecological decisions and New technologies” is in the Festival program with the participation of representatives of state and international institutions, scientists, experts, ecologists and business, Business Incubator Building – Kardzhali (14.30 pm, 16 September,)
Trees will be planted in the festival park Green Europe during the event. On the programme are also international environmental exhibitions, and a photo exhibition about the first Bulgarian participation in the Dakar Rally.

Official Ceremony For Welcoming Tarpans
The official ceremony for welcoming the Tarpans (wild horses) that arrived Monday to Bulgaria is scheduled on September 6, 8 am in the area of the village of Sbor, Krumovgrad municipality.

These are the first 12 tarpans that will be reintroduced in Bulgaria within the New Thracian Gold project (NTG). The Tarpans arrival to Sbor is coordinated by Hristo Hristov, expert on wildlife in the NTG project.
In the first year of the Bulgarian experiment wildlife experts will keep the Tarpans fenced for appropriate habituation to the Rhodopian wilderness. When the horses are accustomed to Bulgarian nature, they shall be released to the wild. Their role in Eastern Rhodopi nature will be the same as in ancient times: to graze the wild vegetation, to mold the wilderness and to support a natural ecosystem.

Young Ambassadors witness and support positive change in Eastern Rhodopes
Dutch Postcode Lottery Charity Ambassadors Rikus Wegman and Sijmen Tenwolde are going to visit the Eastern Rhodopes (25 August - 2 September) and see the achievements made in the “New Thracian Gold” project.
Rikus and Sijmen, 27 years old students were selected by the Lottery on 31 March among over 5200 applications. Starting June 1, Rikus and Sijmen are travelling the world to report on the work of charities (beneficiaries) supported by the lottery, among which is New Thracian Gold. During their six months journey, they use social media as Facebook, Twitter and blogs on their website www.internationaalambassadeur.nl to report on and inform the Dutch public and participants of the Lottery about all the different projects done by beneficiaries of the Lottery. The International Ambassadors want to show how participating in the lottery and thus supporting over 80 charities can make positive changes.
In the Eastern Rhodopes both young guys will participate in color marking the ecotrail Madzharovo-Chernichino, in GPS tracking of semi-wild Karakachan horses and in a training tour for local nature guides. They will visit the model farm (organic food) in the village of Topolovo established within the NTG project, the Vulture center in Madzharovo, the nature reserve in Studen Kladenets, Red deer and Tarpan horses reintroduction areas. Rikus and Sijmen will have the opportunity to see the rich biodiversity of the beautiful Eastern Rhodopes, to discuss its potential as prosperous nature lovers’ destination and report about the achievements made by the project in its three components: eco tourism, organic farming and wilderness.

Reconstruction of an Authentic Spelt Harvest in the Eastern Rhodopes

A reconstruction of an authentic spelt harvest is planned in Tepavitza house in Rabovo, Municipality of Stambolovo on 22 and 23 July 2011 during the Eastern Rhodopes Bread Festival. The bread festival is a newborn tradition which took place for the first time in 2010.
Producers and consumers of organic cereals, fans of the Bulgarian traditions and especially those who have a special appreciation for spelt – the oldest cereal in Bulgaria, meet during the bread festival.
The farmer Petko Angelov is the initiator of spelt event. He started with just a hand full of spelt and presently owns 48 acres. His production procedure and his spelt are now in the process of being certified as an ecoproduct.

The “New Thracian Gold" will participate in the first ever Tradition And Future Festival, organized in Kardzhali in the beginning of the tourist season (14 May). The stand of the project will have Eastern Rhodopes products - honey and wine and plenty of information materials on environment.
The project is going to participate in the contest The most delicious Rhodopes pastry, which will be one of the highlights of the festival.
The ambitions of Tradition and Future Festival is to present cultural heritage and traditional cuisine of the Eastern Rhodopes. Each municipality in Kardzhali district will have its own pavilion at the festival. Regional Museum of History - Kardzhali will expose souvenirs presenting the historical and cultural sites of interests in the region.
The festival program includes also performances of folk groups awarded at the Folk festival in the town in Koprivshtitsa.

Holiday SPA & Expo 2011
The New Thracian gold project will participate in the annual international travel fair Holiday SPA & Expo in 17 - 19 February 2011. The event will take place in the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. All counterparts of the project, also partners and local people are invited to be present. Ideas and information materials are welcome.
The stand will be on the 3th floor, together with the national stands of Greece and Turkey. The name of the stand will be "New Thracian Gold - Eastern Rhodopes".
A presentation of the new Eastern Rhodopi tourist map will be held on 18-th of February in hall 7, floor 5, starting at 13,00 o'clock.

Mid-winter counting of the wetland birds in Bulgаria
On 15-16 January 2011 a trip for mid-winter counting of the wetland birds will be organized by the New Thracian Gold project. Participants will be young people from eco club Rhodopi in Kardzhali, volunteers from the area and journalists. The event will be coordinated by Hristo Hristov - Wilderness coordinator in Bulgaria. The dam lakes Studen kladenets, Kardzhali, Borovitsa end the part of the Arda river around Kardzhali (4 wetlands in total) will be observed. The participants will observe and describe the birds from special birdwatching points.The initiative is a part of an annual counting of the wetland birds in the whole Bulgaria. The main purpose is follow and study the population of the those birds.
The Mid-winter census of waterfowl is part of a global initiative of Wetlands International, carried out in more than 100 countries all over the world. The censuses are implemented annually in Europe since 1967, while in Bulgaria they started out in 1977. The census is carried out by the experts from the Environmental Executive Agency and the Ministry of Environment and Water, Bulgarian Academy of Science, and experts and volunteers from NGOs.
The counting of birds in the wetlands gives information about the number, species composition and distribution of waterfowl. The results are used to evaluate changes in the populations of species to assess environmental changes and their consequences for people and biodiversity.
Last year at the same event a total number of 1494 birds from 26 species were seen and recorded.

Focus groups annual meeting 2010
On the 30th of November 2010 an Annual meeting of the Management of the New Thracian gold project and the focus groups will be organized in the town of Kardzhali. Representatives from all five target municipalities Madzharovo, Ivaylovgrad, Kardzhali, Stambolovo and Krumovgrad will be present
The program of the meeting includes reporting the implemented activities during the last year, discussion with the participants, seminar on a subject "How to cooperate in the agricultural and tourism business" and making an action plan for the next 2011.
The event will take place in the big hall of the local Kardzhali district Authority, on 30th of November, from 09,00 to 17,00 h.

The eco guides training is in accordance with NTG's aims for Tourism component - training of local people. Qualified guide 
services is one of the main factors for good development of the tourist destination. That's why we need motivated and well prepared young people to provide those services to tourists. All invited participants were involved in previous tourism trainings or activities like marking of the eco trail near Bolyartsi village and green school – cleaning action in Madzharovo area.

Description of the training:
The training will involve mainly young people from Eastern Rhodopes. The lecturers are chosen and organizaed by BAAT.

Expected results:
This training, together with all professional trainings, planned to be implemented into the frames of NTG project, has to „produce“ guides prepared to lead tourists on the fileds and in the mountains, to cope with different situations, to overcome inner conflicts, to offer qualitative tourist services to our future visitors.

The share-of-experience trip for 12 entrepreuners from Eastern Rhodopi area was organized in the beginning of the month of October for 4 days in Strandzha Mountains.
All participants were involved in previous NTG trainings during 2009 and 2010. After the information seminars in the 5 target municipalities, also the few training courses in the tourism component, a group of seriously interested people was formed. Some of them already develop small tourist activities, others are in the very beginning of becoming a part of the tourism business.
Purpose of the training:
-
To share good practices and ideas with Strandzha people who already walked the way the ER people just started to walk on
-
To persuade the ER people that working together under one regional brand could be successful only if all involved parts are united and have similar vision for development
-
To show the ER people that developing extra services is not an easy thing to do, but it's something which add value to the main product and brings more tourists to the area
-
To show the ER people that a local association (organization, cooperative) is important if we want the ER to become a real tourist destination
Results:

We succeed to strengthen the relationships established in the month of May

Good practices and experienced were exchanged

Our ER people saw how the cooperation and common actions could become really successful for all the area

The participants understood that the brand doesn't bring them tourists at 100% in the meaning that the brand is not somehow obliged to the guest houses to provide them tourists all the year round

The participants understood also that they have to work hard for the brand too and to keep their quality and hospitality at the highest level, otherwise the tourists themselves won't be willing to go to them

An agreement on organizing a similar trip for Strandzha people to visit the ER in Spring time was achieved

The training duration is 4 months (6 school hours per week, total of 96 school hours). The teachers are local English teachers from Madzharovo (Daniela Tosheva) and Ivaylovgrad schools (Dimitrina Ivanova). All participants will receive a diploma for A1 Beginner level after taking an examination.
The main purpose of the trainings is to have more English speaking people in the sphere of tourism business so that the Eastern Rhodopes become a friendly and welcoming foreign tourists destination.

n Ivaylovgrad, in 25 – 27 June 2010.
25 land and household owners from the area of the Eastern Rodopi Mountains are invited. Lecturers from BAAT will teach the participants into “what is alternative tourism”, “what is a tourist product”, "what are the regulation decrees in BG concerning the tourism development”, etc.
Coordinator tourism Mihaela Kircheva will teach the participants what are the concrete steps needed before starting a B&B business and what is needed to be developed after. Also the criteria and conditions for applying for NTG financial support will be explained.
Local farmer's family from Gorno pole village in Madzharovo area will explain and show their experience in the sphere of agro-tourism business.

The international travel exhibition Holiday Spa & Expo is the most significant travel show in 
Bulgaria and it is organized annually in the month of February. The event take place in the National House of Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 25 to 27 February 2010. NTG representatives are Mihaela, Hristo and Johan – coordinators plus assistant, and some of the local farmers and guest house owners.
Total number of the participants is 341, participants from Bulgaria – 271, from abroad – 58.
National tourism organizations and tourist companies – from Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Russia, Tunisia and Turkey.
Tourist companies from Croatia, Macedonia, Thailand, the Netherlands, Romania, Morocco, Czech Republic, Malta, UK, Germany, Israel and Peru.
Companies participated for the first time – from South Africa, Slovenia and Dubai.
Tendences:

70% of the Bulgarian exhibitors are traditional and long termed participants

The participation of the Eastern Rhodopes region is organized as a part of the activities planned in the Alternative Tourism component, according to the Aims and Objectives of the New Thracian Gold project. The main goal of this participation is to popularize the Eastern Rhodopes area, to show how the New Thracian Gold will help the local enterpreuners and to evoke the interest of the touroperators, travel agencies, media, NGO-s and potential tourists.
A multimedia presentation of the New Thracian gold project is organized on 26th of February. About 800 people are invited, around 50 are expected to be present. The main purpose of the presentation is to represent the main goals of the NTG project, to represent the possibilities for organizing ecotrips to the Eastern Rhodopes, also to make contacts with media and all organizations who will be present as their presence means that they are really interested.

Midsummer Festival
For the first time the “Midsummer Festival” is organized in Ivaylovgrad on June 23 - 24.The initiative and organization is in the hands of “Yamantievi” winery in cooperation with the Municipality of Ivaylovgrad. Media partners are NOVA TV, BNR, newspaper “Nov zhivot”. There will be a dinner and wine tasting in the courtyard of the winery and outdoor celebrations near villa Armira.
The festival is on the same day as Enyovden and there will be discussions about herbs, fires, meeting the sunrise, demonstrations of local dishes, mummers' games, folklore events, tastings of local traditional dishes and more. Entrance fee (30 BGN) includes participation to all events.
