Likana protected site

The Likana protected site has an area of 3 ha. It was established with Order No:RD-328 of 08.05.1992 by the Ministry of Environment and Waters.

The Likana protected site contains characteristic landscapes in the land of the village of Svirachi, Ivaylovgrad Municipality. It was set up to protect the natural habitat of the Eastern Hooded Helleborine orchid. A large number of rare and protected plants can be found here in a small area.

Likana is a kingdom of orchids. 15 species of those pretty flowers grow here in close proximity, among which the butterfly orchid (Orchis papilionaceaе/Anacamptis papilionacea), included in Bulgaria’s Red Book, the pyramidal orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis), the Horned bee orchid (Ophris cornuta), which is one of the most original Bulgarian orchids. Its blossoms have a striking resemblance to an insect.

In Bulgaria, the Eastern Hooded Helleborine (Cephalanthera epipactoides) is only to be found in the Likana protected site. Other rare species to be found here are the wild sage (Salvia verbenace) and the Mediterranean milkwort (Polygala monspeliaca).
