NTG is presented in a book about the best practices in the Natura 2000 zones

The New Thracian Gold project and in particular, its organic farming component are presented in the recently published book „For better future: best practices in the Natura 2000 network“. The official launch of the book took place today in Sofia. The NTG expert on biodiversity Stefan Avramov made a presentation about the NTG project.

In 2012, the first Bulgarian research was started on the effects of organic farming on the agrobiodiversity. This studuy was done in the context of the organic farming component of the NTG project. The study aimed on specific monitoring of the population trends of indicator species (insects, birds, small mammals) in the target region of the Eastern Rhodopes.

The research was done by a group of Bulgarian experts in biodiversity.

The census results confirm that sites with organic farming have a higher index of biodiversity as compared to sites with conventional farming. This corresponds with international experience: many practices that increase productivity in organic farming, naturally improve the conditions for native plants and animals and also help the biodiversity.

The outcome of this research are published in the NTG brochure “Protection of the agrobiodiversity in the region of the Eastern Rhodopes”.

A training program is conducted for 15 organic producersof the NTG network in the East Rhodopian target area. Following a visit to Austria, Croatia and Slovenia in 2013 they started using a simplified pilot model of monitoring the agrobiodiversity conducted by themselves in their own organic farms.

The book „For better future: best practices in the Natura 2000 network“ is financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Program Environment. See on page 59 the NTG Best Practice presented in the book (in Bulgarian).
