International Biodiversity Day Celebrated in Kardzhali

On the 22^nd May, for twentieth consecutive year the whole world celebrated the International Biodiversity Day.

In Kardzhali, in the center of this year’s celebration was the unique Heron colony located in the heart of the town. The event is organized by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB/Birdlife Bulgaria) with the support of New Thracian Gold project and members of the Eco-club of Cultural Center “Obedinenie”.

 More than 100 citizens and guests of Kardzhali visited the information stand and with telescopes and binoculars observed some inhabitants of the Heron colony – Night Heron, Little Egret, Pygmy Cormorant etc. They all learned interesting facts about these rare birds and their function in the ecosystems, about the great biodiversity of Eastern Rhodopes and our responsibility for enshrining it.

The event gathered students from the local school “Vladimir Dimitrov – Maistora”, Dutch students, who are doing studies under NTG project and a group of Dutch tourists. In the recent years, the Heron colony located in the heart of the town has became a very popular destination for local and foreign tourists and is already one of the symbols of the town.

This activity is implemented under the project “Promoting the Nature Information and Conservation center in Madzharovo and increasing awareness of wildlife heritage in the Eastern Rhodopes” supported by New Thracian Gold project.
