Area Field of Astracantha Thracica Declared Protected

The site "Field of Astracantha thracica“ in the area of the village Vodentsi, Municipality of Stambolovo (Eastern Rhodopes) will be declared a protected site for the conservation  of Astracantha thracica and its habitat. This has been announced by the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW).

The site "Field of Astracantha thracica“ is one of nine new Bulgarian protected areas. The total area of the nine new protected areas is 1380 dka. The territories were proposed under the project "Establishment of a network of protected areas for the conservation of plants in Bulgaria", implemented by the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Researches at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with MoEW.

The plant Astracantha thracica, member of the legume family, has survived the last glacial period. It is a 40 cm xeromorphic, spiny shrub, growing on limestone slopes, flowering pink or yellow in mid summer.
