Discover the Eastern Rhodope's magic with Fokko Erhart

Fokko Erhart, NTG Natural grazing coordinator, published a 32 page booklet about the Eastern Rhodopes.

The booklet is in Dutch language, with an English preface, summary and photo captions ONTDEK DE MAGIE VAN DE OOSTELIJKE RHODOPEN ("Discover the magic of the Eastern Rhodopes"). It presents with short text and a great variety of beautiful photos the rich biodiversity of the Eastern Rhodopes, its mosaic landscape and the important role of grazing animals, local rare breeds and Tarpans, the wild horses reintroduced in this region an year ago.

The book is written to make people enthusiastic about this unique part of Europe. A region that deserves to be discovered, Fokko Erhart writes.  The booklet will be translated into Bulgarian and released in March 2013.

Fokko’s first visit to the Eastern Rhodopes was13 years ago as a tourist. He immediately fell in love with the beauty and rich biodiversity of this region. In later years he continued visiting the region for wildlife photography and he initiated grazing projects with local experts.

In 2002, he started a project on the protection of Rhodopеan Shorthorn cattle, a local rare breed. Nowadays, within the framework of New Thracian Gold there are 7 Shorthorn herds involved in the natural grazing project, with a total of 300 animals. Fokko is also involved in NTG’s Tarpan pilot project: 12 Tarpans, wild horses have been brought in September 2012 to the Eastern Rhodopes.
