161 Griffon Vultures Counted in the Eastern Rhodopes

On December 1st, in the valley of Arda River 161 Griffon Vultures have been counted during the 8th Griffon Vultures roosting sites census on the Balkans. In 2011 the number was 150.

The Census in Bulgaria was conducted by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) in partnership with other environmental organizations from Bulgaria.

18 teams participated in the Griffon Vultures census in the Eastern Rhodopes including the Eco Club – Kardzhali and Hristo Hristov, wilderness-coordinator of the New Thracian Gold project. Their team counted Griffon Vultures in the area of the Golemiyat Sipey (The Big Scree) protected site.

This year’s Griffon Vultures census in the Eastern Rhodopes was part of the Nature conservation camp in the Vulture Center in Madzharovo organized by BSPB with the financial support of NTG. 40 volunteers joined the camp activities. During November  30st – December 2nd  those volunteers finished the restauration work on  the feeding station in Madzharovo, cleaned up the tourist infrastructure and conducted the Griffon Vultures census in the valley of the Arda River.
