The EU Logo for Organic Produce Mandatory
From July 1, 2012, the logo of the European Union certifying organic produce will become mandatory for all pre-packaged bio/organic food products produced in the EU and which meet the required standards.
The EU logo for organic products known as the European leaf was introduced on July 1st 2010, but in order to facilitate producers in the adaptation to the new rules and so as to avoid disposal of already existing packaging a two-year transition period was resolved before the measure was to become mandatory for all.
In recent years there has been a steady increase in the consumption of organic products in the EU, with a current market share of around 2%.
In Bulgaria in 2011, organic production has increased following world trends and the growth of areas and production which is due to the increased demand of such products on the global and European markets. In 2011 the total area in the control system in our country (in transition areas and areas that have undergone the transition period - 26,622 ha) has increased by about 3.80 percent compared to 2010.
