The New Thracian Gold Project is supporting economic growth and welfare in the Eastern Rhodopes Mountains by developing activities which combine organic farming, nature conservation and tourism. This project is carried out by the Dutch nature conservation organisations Ark and Avalon and financially supported by the Dutch Post-code Lottery in the period of 2009- 2014.

Guests and inhabitants of Plovdiv, the second biggest city in Bulgaria have the unique opportunity till the end of February to see the acclaimed NTG exhibition “The Wild World of the Eastern Rhodopes. It is placed in the building of the Municipal Council of Plovdiv (20, A. Veleshki str). Free admission. From 9 to 18 hrs. every day. The exhibition presents 26 photos of breathtaking landscapes, magnificent mammals, rare birds and reptiles, flowers and mysterious insects from this beautiful and little known Bulgarian region. The organic tahini factory Bioterra, a member of the New Thracian Gold network in the Eastern Rhodopes is among the first clients of the recently started initiative BioTaxi.  NTG team believes that more organic and in conversion producers will follow Bioterra and join the BioTaxi initiative to improve their marketing capacity. 2450 waterbirds of 17 species have been recorded at the two reservoirs – Kardzhali and Studen Kladenets – and along the Arda River in the Eastern Rhodopes during the traditional Midwinter waterbird count (18 – 19 January 2014). Traditionally, the the most numerous were mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), Common Pochard (Aythya ferina) and Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus). New Thracian Gold joined the traditional Midwinter waterbird count for the fifth consecutive year. Read more

 

3400 students got acquainted with the unique nature of Eastern Rhodopes during the last year. They learnt interesting facts about somey of the rarest and protected plant and animal species which are symbols of this rich of biodiversity region. This is the result from an education project funded by ARK Nature and New Thracian Gold and implemented by Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB). Read more

 

Birdwatching in Madzharovo (Eastern Rhodopes) is one of the Bulgarian highlights in Rough Guides for this year. Bulgaria is eighth in the 2014 edition of the "Top 10 Countries" ranking of British travel guidebook and reference publisher Rough Guides. Read more

 

New Thracian Gold will present the project and the tourism potential of the Eastern Rhodopes at HOLIDAY & SPA EXPO 2014 in Sofia from 13 to 15 February 2014. This is the 5th NTG participation in this prestigious international tourist fair.  Follow our Calendar for more NTG events!
