The New Thracian Gold Project is supporting economic growth and welfare in the Eastern Rhodopes Mountains by developing activities which combine organic farming, nature conservation and tourism. This project is carried out by the Dutch nature conservation organisations Ark and Avalon and financially supported by the Dutch Post-code Lottery in the period of 2009- 2014.

Horsefly Films' Sophie Dia Pegrum and Jen Miller have returned home to the USA to start editing their film on the Bulgarian Tarpans. They have spent six days in May in the Eastern Rhodopes where in 2011 Tarpans have been reintroduced. Read more / See photos

 

On May 23rd, the first organic tahini factory in Bulgaria - BIOTERRA – IVAYLOVGRAD Ltd. - was officially opened in the village of Kondovo, Municipality Ivaylovgrad. This factory could be launched thanks to the expertise and co-finance of New Thracian Gold project (NTG). Read more

 

A group of experts made a second visit to the Eastern Rhodopes between May 20 to 23 in order to continue the research of the local agro-biodiversity. Read more

 

On the 22nd May, for the twentieth consecutive year the worldwide International Biodiversity Day was celebrated. In the Eastern Rhodopes the biodiversity focus was on the unique Heron colony at the Arda river in the city heart of Karzhali. One of the co-organizers of the event was NTG. Many citizens were offered a view through telescopes on the Heron colony. Read more

 

On 22 May, the booklet "Discover the magic of the Eastern Rhodopes" of our NTG colleague Fokko Erhart was presented at a special event in the Kardzhali Regional Historical Museum. Dutch Ambassador to Bulgaria Mr. Karel van Kesteren received the first copy of the booklet. Read more

 

“The Wild World of the Eastern Rhodopes" – the photo exposition that enjoyed a great interest in Sofia end of April/begin of May - is now in Kardzhali. You can see it in Kardzhali Regional Historical Museum till 31 May. First who saw the exhibition where the inhabitants and guests of the town during the Night of the Museums on May 18th. The Rewilding Europe concept to which the region of the Eastern Rhodopes has a great chance to join, was presented at a special event on May 17th at Credo Bonum Gallery in Sofia. Minister of Environment and Water Julian Popov and Dutch Ambassador Karel van Kesteren attended the event. Read more

 

NTG biodiversity coordinator Hristo Hristov made a presentation on „Wilderness and natural grazing“ during the nature conservational educational camp Kartali (7 – 11 May). Read more

 

On May 9th, NTG coordinator on ecotourism Mihaela Kircheva delivered a lecture in Otets Paissii School in Kardzhali on “Adventures in the wildlife and development of sustainable tourism in the Eastern Rhodopes". Read more

 

Residents and guests of Gorno Pole (Eastern Rhodopes) participated in the first ever Felt atelier organized from 6 to 8 May in the guesthouse "Wild Farm", member of New Thracian Gold network. Dutch and Bulgarian artists demonstrated felt techniques and showed what can be made from wool and especially, from Karakachan wool: jewelry, bags, hats, etc. Read more / See photos

 

NTG organizes on May 31, and June 1, 2 a photography workshop for interested nature photographers.  During that weekend three completely new shelters for wildlife observation and photography in the Eastern Rhodopes will be presented: one in the hunting reserve "Studen kladenets", one in the village of Gorno pole and one in the village of Kostilkovo. Reminder: In 2013, NTG project organizes for the third time two contests „Eastern Rhodopes – taste the wild nature“: 1: for the most interesting travel story and 2: for the best photo. We’d like to see in your text and photo entries a combination or one of the three NTG-elements: wilderness/nature, ecotourism or organic farming. The deadline for submitting the travel stories and the photos is October 1st, 2013.  Read more
