The New Thracian Gold Project is supporting economic growth and welfare in the Eastern Rhodopes Mountains by developing activities which combine organic farming, nature conservation and tourism. This project is carried out by the Dutch nature conservation organisations Ark and Avalon and financially supported by the Dutch Post-code Lottery in the period of 2009- 2014.

Kichka Dyankova and Yassena Popova are the winners in the second edition of the Competition „Eastern Rhodopes – taste the wild nature“. They submitted the most interesting travel story and the best photo, according to the jury of New Thracian Gold. The number of participants submitting journey notes and photos in the 2012 contest exceeded the numbers of the 2011 competition. The juries are pleased to announce that this year’s quality is also higher. Read more and see the winning photos and texts

 

On 20 and 21 October, our colleague Hristo Hristov, coordinator on wilderness in New Thracian Gold project was among the participants in the action for fenced by an electric fence the feeding station for Vultures in Madzharovo. The action was financed by NTG. Read more

 

In October, Black and Griffon Vultures were photographed at the supplementary feeding site near the village of Pelevun, Eastern Rhodopes. The photo-trap has taken amazing photos in October. See them

 

Foundation New Thracian Gold – Bulgaria started working in partnership with the national Hunting Association on the reintroduction of the Fallow deer in all the Eastern Rhodopes. Two releases of 120 animals are planned in the eastern and southern parts of the Eastern Rhodopes. Read more

 

Owners of seven of the present and future guest houses from Kardzhali and the villages of Lubino, Vishnevo, Banite, Madrets and Pelevun – partners of NTG, located along the Long Distance Trail for biking and hiking in the Eastern Rhodopes, a representative of Bulgarian Tourist Union in Kardzhali and guides took part in the information meeting about the trail on October 26 in Kardzhali. The newly born initiative Hrancoop provides opportunities for the produce of the organic and in conversion farmers in the Eastern Rhodopes, members of a network of New Thracian Gold. Read more

 

In October, Bulgarian National Radio broadcast a reportage in several languages about Crossbill guidebook on the Eastern Rhodopes, which will be available on the book market in March next year and will bear the title “Eastern Rhodopes, including Dadia, Evros and Nestos”. Although the dry and extremely hot summer and early autumn in Eastern Rhodope the animals from the New Thracian Gold herds are in very good condition, shows the autumn herd review concluded by Fokko Erhard and Hristo Hristov, experts in wilderness and natural grazing of the project. Blagovesta Vassilieva from the New Thracian Gold network won the Award for the most young agricultural producer of the exhibition “The agriculture in the Rhodopes – a source for high quality and healthy foods” organized in Kardzhali on October 18th. Read more

 

The New Thracian Gold project was presented at the Adventure Travel World Summit 2012 that took place between 8 and 11 October in Lucerne, Switzerland. The specialized summit held for a ninth consecutive year attracted more than 600 professionals in the field of the adventure tourism. See more

 

In October, Hristo Hristov, NTG-coordinator on wilderness and biodiversity, reported two otters, found dead on the road in the Kardzhali region. The animals were hit by a car during their migration.

Currently, the otters do their seasonal migration and cross roads and bridges, where the animals easily become victims especially when the drivers’ speed exceeds the limits. Therefore, Hristov urgently requested the drivers to be very careful at night. Several Bulgarian media widely covered his appeal. Read more

 

On October 7th BNT, Bulgarian National Television broadcasted a 30 minute documentary on the Eastern Rhodopes and its huge potential for ecotourism. “The Unknown Eastern Rhodopes” was shown in the program slot called Traveling with BNT-2. Read more and see here the documentary

 

On October 7th, many people watched birds in the unique Heron colony in the city center of Kardzhali. The town joined the European Bird Days (6-7 October 2012). It was a joint action of New Thracian Gold project and several organizations. Read more

 

The opportunities for organic farmers from the Eastern Rhodopes in increasing production, marketing the necessary investments and finding markets through the creation of cooperation of producers have been thoroughly explained by Head of "Organic Farming" at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food - Diana Trifonova at seminar in Kardzhali on 6 October. The seminar was organized by the "New Thracian Gold" project in the second edition of the Cooking Days in the Eastern Rhodopes. Read more

 

New opportunities for ecotourism in theStuden Kladenets” Reserve are available after the opening of the new observation lodge on October 6th.  The new lodge will also be available for Bulgarian and foreign tourists who want to observe the rich biodiversity of “Studen Kladenets” Reserve.  Read more

 

Pastry made of old bread and apples, cake in a jar that can last for years, chutneys - sweet-sour pickles from the last harvest, honey candied thin strips of vegetables and fruits, butter flavored with dried flowers such as cornflowers, marigolds, rose ...These are just some of the delicatessen that Dutch culinary expert Carolina Verhoeven presented during the second edition of the culinary Days in the Eastern Rhodopes, which took place on October 5th in the "Wild Farm" in the village of Gorno Pole, Municipality of Madzharovo. On October 4th, New Thracian Gold organized a workshop on natural grazing. The meeting was in the Madzharovo Vulture Center. Participants were those farmers who participate in NTG’s grazing program. Read more

 

On 29 September, NTG Youth Eco club took action to clean-up people's waste in the Heron colony in the riverbed of the Arda in the town of Kardzhali. Their leader and NTG coordinator on wildlife Hristo Hristov headed the activity. Read more

 

The coordinator on organic farming in NTG Vladislav Popov made a presentation on the achievements of the project in the Eastern Rhodopes at a round table "Organic farming in Bulgaria and experience in the Eastern Rhodopes", which took place within the European Environment Festival "Green wave - 21st Century "on September 28 in Kardzhali. From 5 to 8 November 2012, the NTG tourism coordinator Mihaela Kircheva will present the project and promote the Eastern Rhodopes as a great ecotourism destination at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London. See more

 

The annual meeting of the focus groups in NTG project is scheduled on Friday November 23rd in Stambolovo.
