The New Thracian Gold Project is supporting economic growth and welfare in the Eastern Rhodopes Mountains by developing activities which combine organic farming, nature conservation and tourism. This project is carried out by the Dutch nature conservation organisations Ark and Avalon and financially supported by the Dutch Post-code Lottery in the period of 2009- 2014.

On September 18th 2012, many guests, tourists, farmers and locals tasted the delicious home-made cheese, yoghurt and butter of the Huskov family during the opening of the tourist attraction “The Route of Cheese” in the family's sheep farm in the village of Plevun, Ivaylovgrad Municipality (Eastern Rhodopes). “The Route of Cheese” was officially opened by Ivaylovgrad Mayor, Diana Ovcharova, and the leader of the Bulgarian-Dutch project New Thracian Gold (NTG), Frank Zanderink. Grapes and wine producers from the Eastern Rhodopes anticipate that this year the harvest to be nearly twice lower but the quality will be higher. See more

Dutch Princess Laurentien van Oranje received two invitations to visit the Eastern Rhodopes. The Princess was attending the official opening of the European Mobility Week in September in Sofia, where she was informed about the New Thracian Gold initiatives. A record total of 400 visitors were welcomed in Roman villa Armira during the four days holiday period around September 6th, Unity Day. These visitors were mainly Bulgarian family groups and Greek tourists, Ivaylovgrad Mayor, Diana Ovcharova told to NTG website. She is convinced the Ivaylovgrad region has a great potential for tourism – historical, nature, wine, culinary, etc. See more
Exactly one year ago (on September 6th 2011), 12 Tarpans arrived in Bulgaria and were released in the Eastern Rhodopes - near the abandoned village of Sbor, Municipality of Krumovgrad. A research on the community participation in the development of tourism in the rural areas of the Eastern Rhodopes is starting in September. It is part of the four month internship of Manuela Ilakova, student at Wageningen University, The Netherlands. See more
New Thracian Gold got two awards at the first ever Festival of traditional food, livelihood and crafts “Culinary Heritage of Thrace” organized on 1 and 2 September in Ivaylovgrad. See more
In July, the New Thracian Gold – Bulgaria Foundation was established. The foundation has the same name, objectives and logo as the NTG project which is active since 2010 in the region of the Eastern Rhodopes. The new foundation is the legal entity for the project initiatives. Read more
Many tourists, nature lovers and representatives of environmental organizations passed by the stand at Beglika Fest 2012 (17-19 August) where New Thracian Gold was presented. They took materials of the project and had the opportunity to talk with the NTG eco tourism coordinator Mihaela Kircheva and biodiversity expert Stefan Avramov. See more
In total, 19 volunteers participated in the traditional nature conservation camp organized by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds in the Conservation Center "Eastern Rhodopes" in Madzharovo from 11 to 17 August. See more
The model of Petko Angelov, member of the New Thracian Gold network seems to become more and more attractive for producers in the Eastern Rhodopes. Einkorn considered the oldest cereal in Bulgaria was harvested again in the village of Limets (Bulgarian for einkorn wheat), Krumovgrad Municipality on 11 August 2012 after many years of break. The New Thracian Gold project organizes a second series of organic culinary events 'Cooking Days – 2’’ with organic and local agricultural produce and food from the Eastern Rhodopes. The major demonstration event will occur on 5 October in the village of Gorno Pole, Madzharovo Municipality, at the ‘’Wild farm’’. See more in Calendar
